Kenna Fair grew up on the West Coast of B.C. In 1992 she graduated from
Emily Carr College of Art and Design's painting department and by 1994
was living and working on Galiano Island. Throughout the last ten years
she has been very involved in the creation and running of The Gulf Islands
Film and Television School and an active participant in the goings on
of Galiano's community. More recently Kenna's love of painting has re-surfaced
and over the last three years her main focus (or let's say obsession)
has been birds of all shapes and sizes, including everything from the
smallest humming bird to the giant great blue heron. She is particularly
interested in birds that are indigenous to the West Coast. Whenever
possible she tries to create the birds life-size to give the viewer
a sense that they are in the presence of these amazing creatures. One
of her goals is to capture the dynamic energy and personality of each
bird and she does this by carving each piece as a relief in wood before
painting in acrylic. The carving gives the paintings depth and movement,
which brings out the attitude and character of each bird. This unique
style has captured the attention of art enthusiasts and galleries alike.
She always enjoys working on commissions for clients,
which gives her the opportunity to work with individual concepts to
create an original work of art.
